Ingredients

  • 1 lb. round steak or ground beef (hamburger)

  • ½ medium onion, chopped

  • 4 tablespoons butter

  • 1 can cream of celery soup

  • 1 soup can milk (use the empty soup can to measure)

  • 2 cans cream of mushroom soup

  • 1 small can (6–8 oz.) mushroom bits and pieces

  • 8 oz. sour cream

  • Cooked rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef and onions. In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the beef and chopped onion. Sauté until the meat is browned and the onions are softened. If using ground beef, break it apart as it cooks.

  2. Add the creamy ingredients. Stir in the cream of celery soup, cream of mushroom soup, milk, and mushroom bits and pieces. Mix until well combined.

  3. Simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

  4. Finish with sour cream. Just before serving, reduce the heat to its lowest setting and stir in the sour cream until fully incorporated and the sauce is smooth and creamy. Avoid boiling after adding the sour cream.

  5. Serve. Spoon the warm beef stroganoff over freshly cooked rice and enjoy!
